Professor Kevin Shakesheff is the Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research, Enterprise and Scholarship at The Open University and Chair of the National Centre for Replacement, Refinement and Reduction (NC3Rs).

Kevin is an expert in regenerative medicine and biologic therapies, having directed the UK Regenerative Medicine Platform for Acellular Materials, with over 350 publications and 13 patent families arising from his research. After qualifying as a pharmacist and completing a PhD in Advanced Drug Delivery Systems he began his independent research career under a NATO Fellowship at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He returned to the UK under an EPSRC Advanced Fellowship and became a Professor at the University of Nottingham in 2002. His invention of new biomaterials for tissue regeneration led to the formation of the UK biotech company Locate Bio Ltd. He was a Board Director of Biocity Ltd for four years until its acquisition by Harrison Street and Trinity IM to form the We are Pioneer Group. At the University of Nottingham he became the first Pro-Vice Chancellor for Science and led on civic initiatives across the University. In this capacity he led the launch of the Universities for Nottingham initiative, chaired One Nottingham, the city’s Strategic Partnership Board and is a Director of the Festival of Science and Curiosity (FOSAC). Over the last two decades he has served on panels and committees for EPSRC, BBSRC, MRC, Innovate UK and Versus Arthritis. International experience includes Board membership of University of Nottingham Ningbo China and leadership of the UK/India Science Bridge, BioPharm 2020.

As the Open University’s Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Research, Enterprise and Scholarship, Kevin has senior responsibility for strategic leadership and implementation of the institutional plans for research, enterprise and scholarship. This includes the University’s submissions to the UK-wide Research Excellence Framework (REF) and its institutional approach to knowledge exchange and expansion of entrepreneurial activities.
