The Open University develops tools and methods to support engineering design processes, carry out empirical studies of engineering practise and work on the theoretical foundations of engineering design.

Engineers need tools and methods to use new technologies effectively. We work with groups of engineers to develop methods that are easy to use, have clear visualisation and representation and enable engineers to make effective decisions. Many products are overdesigned which adds cost and weight but also assures robustness and gives the product flexibility. Margins also play a key role in optimising product platforms and making designs upgradable. We work on modelling, displaying and optimising. Additive manufacturing requires new design methods. We have expertise in designing and optimising for additive manufacture considering manufacturing and post processing constraints. Expertise in Wire + Arc Additive Manufacture, Fused Deposition modelling, Selective Lased Melting
